Round Hill — Democratic candidate for the Blue Ridge District Supervisor Tia Walbridge released the following statement in response to Madison's Trust Elementary's decision to have students engage in a runaway slave "game" during gym class:
"It is mind-boggling that we need to have a conversation about why making our students participate in an Underground Railroad-themed obstacle course is not okay.
I’m grateful for a swift apology — but more importantly, I am encouraged that LCPS has taken the time to meet with and listen to leaders of communities of color, and has recognized this event as not an isolated incident but a symptom of a larger issue of systemic racism and has committed to making substantial structural changes.
At a time when KKK fliers line our streets and slurs are carved in the snow on the lawns of our neighbors of color, we all must commit to doing better. We cannot and must not accept this as normal.
We have much work to do in the Blue Ridge, Loudoun, and Virginia as a whole."
